This conference is organized by postgraduate students of the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at UCL (www.ucl.ac.uk/histmed). It will take place in London on the 25th and 26th June 2009, in the recently refurbished Wellcome Building which also houses the world-renowned Wellcome Library and the exciting new Wellcome Collection.

The conference aims to bring together research students from a wide variety of intellectural and cultural backgrounds to provide a forum for the comparison and exchange of approaches to medical history. How easily does methodological theory translate into practice? What are the strengths and drawbacks of your methodological approach? To what extent are differing approaches complementary? How might apparently contradictory approaches be reconciled? Student-led discussion of these and other questions will be chaired by established European scholars in the field.

Proposals for papers are invited addressing the relationship between theoretical, methodological and practical approaches to the historical study of medicine and related sciences. Participants should demonstrate how a specific approach or set of approaches informs their own research. Papers are encouraged from all periods and places in seeking a wide-ranging and inclusive set of discussions. Organizers hope to include papers from research students from a variety of disciplines, and would especially welcome participants from outside the UK.

The conference is sponsored by the Wellcome Trust, the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Royal Historical Society. Bursaries will be available for student speakers. Conference proceedings will be published as an open-access online resource.

Please send an abstract of not more than 200 words, together with the title of your proposed paper, your name and institution to conference@methods2009.eu by 1st March 2009.

This website is still under development and will eventually contain further details about this conference as well as practical information for participants. In the meantime, feel free to contact the organizers with any enquiries.
